Unique solution verified ✓Reading Level 10's six regions
Blue takes R3C4, R4C5, R5C3, R5C4, R5C5 and R6C5: 6 cells.
Lilac takes R5C1, R6C1 and R6C2 (3 cells tucked into the bottom-left corner).
Pink takes R5C6, R6C3, R6C4 and R6C6: 4 cells.
The salmon cells: R1C1, R1C2, R2C1, R2C2 and R4C1 (a 5-cell patch).
Green takes R1C3, R1C4, R2C3, R2C4, R2C5, R3C1, R3C2, R3C3, R3C5, R4C2, R4C3, R4C4 and R5C2: 13 cells.
The cream cells: R1C5, R1C6, R2C6, R3C6 and R4C6 (a 5-cell patch).
Blue touches green ×16, cream ×3, pink ×11, lilac ×1.
Lilac touches salmon ×1, green ×4, blue ×1, pink ×1.
Pink touches blue ×11, cream ×1, green ×1, lilac ×1.
Salmon touches green ×13, lilac ×1.
Green borders salmon ×13, cream ×9, blue ×16, lilac ×4, pink ×1.
Cream touches green ×9, blue ×3, pink ×1.
Each contact is a no-touch wall, even the diagonal ones, so a placed cat silences every cell it touches across those borders.
How to Solve Level 10, Step by Step
The lilac region is a three-cell corner and the first question on the board: empty R5C1 and column 3 has no cell left for its cat, so R5C1 is the cat. Row 5 closes at once (R5C3, R5C4, R5C5, R5C6) and column 1 closes with it (R1C1, R2C1, R3C1), which is most of the top left settled before any counting.
Salmon's open cells are R1C2 and R2C2, both in column 2, so column 2's cat is salmon's and R3C2 is out. Pink's open cells all sit in row 6, so row 6's cat is pink's, and R6C5, row 6's cell outside pink, goes with it.
The cream region is a vertical strip at the right edge, and it gives the next cat through a test: empty R4C5 and cream ends up needing two cats, so R4C5 must hold the blue cat. Column 5 and row 4 are both settled by that one placement.
From there the grid answers itself: R3C3 is the only open cell of row 3, R1C2 the only one in column 2, R2C6 the only one in row 2, R6C4 the only one in column 4.
The last of those deserves a note. R6C4 belongs to pink, and pink's cat was already known to be on row 6: this placement says exactly which cell of row 6 it is.
That is the shape of most 6×6 boards: one or two tests to break the symmetry, then a run of single-cell units. The tests are the only places a wrong turn was possible, and both were short enough to check by hand.
Final set: R1C2, R2C6, R3C3, R4C5, R5C1, R6C4. One cat in every row, every column and every region, none of them adjacent, diagonals included. Two of the moves above were contradiction checks, two were shape deductions, and four were single cells with only one home left, which is about the mix a 6×6 board of this kind gives you.
Where Level 10 wants you to slip
Try R5C2 first and the lilac region is wiped out in one move: every cell it owns aligns with that spot, same line, or one corner over.
Hints for Level 10: Four Nudges
- Lilac is the three-cell corner and the first question: empty R5C1 and column 3 starves, so R5C1 carries the cat, and row 5 plus column 1 close at once.
- Salmon's open cells sit in column 2, so column 2's cat is salmon's and R3C2 is out; pink's open cells sit in row 6, so row 6's cat is pink's and R6C5 goes.
- The cream strip decides the right edge. Empty R4C5 and cream ends up needing two cats, so R4C5 is the blue cat. That one placement settles row 4 and column 5 together.
- Four single-cell units finish the grid: R3C3 for row 3, R1C2 for column 2, R2C6 for row 2, R6C4 for column 4. The order between them does not matter.
