CASE №1 · 4×4

Witness Statements

No two figures share a row or column. The suspect alone in the victim's room is the killer.

📖 What the statements mean tap to collapse
In a room / NOT in a roomThat suspect's room is fixed (or excluded). Place them there first.
On a rug / Beside a tableWhat the suspect stands on or next to. Rug and table cells are drawn inside rooms.
At a wallOnly the outside edge of the whole board counts. The thin lines between rooms are partitions, not walls.
In a cornerOnly the four corners of the board itself: two outside edges meet there.
Same room as X / Alone with XX is a suspect or the victim. "Alone with" means exactly two figures in that room.
Exactly K figures / Room lockedRoom counts include the victim. "Locked" means nobody was inside.

How to Play Murder Sudoku

Murder sudoku is a hybrid of two classics: the row-and-column discipline of sudoku and the deduction of a whodunit. Each case gives you a mansion floor plan carved into named rooms, a cast of suspects, and a set of witness statements. Every statement is true. Your job is to work out where each suspect was standing when the body was found.

  • Place the suspects. Select a suspect from the tray, then tap a room cell to place them. No two figures can share a row or a column: the same sudoku rule you already know.
  • Read the statements. Each witness gives exactly one testimony: where they were, what they were standing on, who they were with, or which room was empty. All of them are true. One rule of the house: "at a wall" always means the outside edge of the whole board: the thin lines between rooms are partitions, not walls.
  • Find the killer. The suspect who ends up alone in the room with the victim is the murderer. When every suspect is placed, hit Accuse! to close the case.

Start with a 4×4 Easy case to learn the flow of deduction, then move up to 6×6 Tricky for longer chains of reasoning.

Deduction Tips

Start with the room statements

Statements like "Mochi was in the Library" or "The Cellar was locked — nobody inside" eliminate the most cells. Place what you know first, and the row and column rule will squeeze the remaining suspects into fewer and fewer legal cells.

Use the sudoku rule aggressively

Because no two figures share a row or column, every placement immediately eliminates an entire row and column. A suspect pinned to one room often has only one legal cell left once the neighbors are placed.

Watch the victim's room

The room holding the victim contains exactly two figures: the victim and the killer. Room-count statements about that room are usually the fastest route to identifying the murderer.

Murder Sudoku FAQ

How do you play murder sudoku?
Place each named suspect on the grid so that no two figures share a row or column, guided by the witness statements. Every statement is true. When all suspects are placed, the suspect who is alone in the room with the victim is the killer — hit Accuse! to close the case.
Is every case solvable without guessing?
Yes. Every GridPaw case is generated with exactly one arrangement that satisfies all witness statements, the room rules, and the row and column rule. The Hint button reveals the correct row, column, and room for the selected suspect.
What does "at a wall" mean?
Only the outside edge of the whole board counts as a wall. The thin lines separating rooms are partitions, not walls — a suspect standing against a partition is not "at a wall". The same rule applies to "in a corner": only the four corners of the board itself.
Is this game free?
Yes, the GridPaw murder sudoku game is completely free to play in your browser. There is no download, no account, and no payment required — just open the page and start deducing.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes — the board, clue list, and suspect tray all work on any device with a browser. Tap a suspect to select them, then tap a room cell to place them.
